Helping Your Child Step into the Right Mindset for the School Year
A new school year isn’t just about new pencils, backpacks, and schedules; it’s also a fresh opportunity for your child to grow, discover, and become the best version of themselves. As moms, we have the privilege of helping them set the tone for the year ahead, not just academically, but mentally and emotionally, too.
One of the best ways to do this is by guiding them to envision the person they want to be at the end of the school year.
✨ Step One: Have Them Write It Down
Ask your child: “When this school year is over, who do you want to be?”
Do they want to be more confident when speaking in front of the class, making friends, or trying new things?
A stronger student in math?
Getting accepted to their dream college?
A kinder friend?
A leader on their sports team?
Trying out for the lead in the school performance?
Encourage them to write down a few words or a short description of this “future self.” This step becomes a compass for their year.
✨ Step Two: Connect the Vision to Achievements
Next, help them think about what it will take to become that person.
If they want to be more confident, maybe it’s raising their hand in class once a day, leading their team in a cheer, or joining NEXTGen Empowered 😉
If they want to grow in math, maybe it’s practicing 15 minutes after school or getting a tutor.
If they want to be kinder, maybe it’s making an effort to include someone new at lunch, or saying hello with a smile to one new person a day.
✨ Step Three: Keep the Vision Visible
Have them put their vision somewhere they’ll see it often—taped to a binder, on their bedroom wall, or even tucked into their planner. Every time they see it, they’ll be reminded of who they are becoming.
This simple but powerful practice teaches kids that success isn’t only about grades or trophies—it’s about growing into the person they want to be. When we help them set their mindset now, we give them the tools to thrive, not just this year, but for years to come.
